Krzysztof Chruscinski 0225ea7ab0 shell: Add callback to shell_uninit function
Shell uninitialization is not synchronous, it is deferred to shell
thread so resources used by the shell (e.g. transport resource like

notifies when all resources are released and shell is uninitialized.
Callback is called from shell thread just before it is aborted.

Anas Nashif 9c1efe6b4b clock: remove z_ from semi-public APIs
The clock/timer APIs are not application facing APIs, however, similar

Jack Rosenthal ea9866dc86 shell: add an option for minimal default configuration
The default shell configuration has heavy flash and memory requirements,
requiring project maintainers to set many configuration options to "n"
to keep flash and memory requirements within reason.

This adds a new configuration option, CONFIG_SHELL_MINIMAL, which will
disable flash and memory heavy options by default, and allow project
maintainers to select/imply only the options they want.

cut flash space requirements by ~8 KB, and memory requirements by ~1 KB.

Nicolas Pitre fb73ac392c lib/os/cbprintf_nano.c: several improvements
This makes cbprintf_nano.c much closer to the standard printf and
therefore more useful. The following are now implemented:

- right justification for everything (only for numbers previously)
- precision value for numbers, chars and strings
- width/precision passed as arguments with *
- "unlimited" padding length
- lower/uppercase hex output
- the #, + and ' ' flags are supported

And the code was heavily reworked to reduce its size as much as
possible to mitigate the size growth. Still, the binary resulting
from cbprintf_nano.c is now between 10% and 20% bigger depending on
the architecture. This is still far smaller than cbprintf_complete.c
which remains about twice as big on average even without FP support.

Many unit tests that were skipped with CONFIG_CBPRINTF_NANO are now
enabled, and a few more were added for good measure.

Marcin Niestroj 7451a32e98 mgmt: smp: shell: allow to configure multiple RX buffers via Kconfig
With only single RX buffer there is a high chance that such buffer will
not be processed before new bytes come in over UART. This is why it is
good to have at least two buffers, one which can be processed by SMP
layer, while another is being filled with new incoming bytes.

Add Kconfig option which allows to configure multiple buffers filled
with received UART SMP fragments. Use default value of 2, so we can
safely process already received frame in thread, while new fragment
comes in concurrently.

Marcin Niestroj 79fa92229a mgmt: smp: shell: use net_buf API for storing UART SMP fragments
So far there was a simple char array used as buffer, with additional
variable representing number of bytes already written into it. After
full frame was written, a boolean flag was simply set to notify thread
about being ready to be processed. There was however no mechanism
implemented to prevent new incoming bytes from overwriting such buffer
before (or during) being processed.

Use net_buf to store temporary frame. Define dedicated net_buf_pool,
from which such buffer will be allocated and freed after being
processed. This will prevent from reusing the same buffer before having
it fully processed (and returning once again to available buffer pool)
in shell thread.

Define also fifo that will store buffers that are ready to be
processed. This will be the mechanism for notifying thread about new
UART SMP fragments.

net_buf pool and k_fifo are used on purpose, keeping in mind their
additional overhead (mostly in RAM/ROM usage). This makes the code ready
for increasing number of buffers if needed. In this commit however we
stick with only 1 buffer, to keep minimal changes in processing flow.

Peter Bigot e812ee6c21 shell: support floating point output with newlib
shell_fprintf requires that formatted output be emitted with a
putchar()-like output function. Newlib does not provide such a
capability. Zephyr provides two solutions: z_prf() which is part of

which is core and does not support floating point.

Move z_prf() out of minimal libc into the core lib area, and use it
unconditionally in the shell.

Dominik Ermel d8c7fc8be6 shell: Fix uart_rx_handle byte processing when ring buffer full
In case when shell ring buffer gets full the data may still be taken
from the UART fifo, byte by byte, and accepted by the SMP back-end,
if the back-end has been enabled.

Unfortunately the uart_rx_handle failed to check if it has been
successfull in reading a byte from the fifo, before passing it to
the SMP for processing, which could lead to processing random stack data
as a part of an SMP frame.

Additinally, when the SMP would have accepted the byte,
the uart_rx_handle would fail to signal shell_thread, that the SMP has
internally buffered data that could be processed.

Marcin Niestroj f74feca027 mgmt: smp: shell: initialize SMP before feeding with received bytes
So far SMP shell transport was initialized in APPLICATION run level, but
shell over UART was initialized in POST_KERNEL. This could end up in
situation when received frames were scheduled for further processing in
SMP layer, when it was not initialized yet.

Export smp_shell_init() function declaration and call it before shell is
initialized with all its receive data handlers. This prevents situation
when data is scheduled for processing in SMP layer, when that one is not
ready yet.

Tomasz Bursztyka 8d7bb8ffd8 device: Refactor device structures
When the device driver model got introduced, there were no concept of
SYS_INIT() which can be seen as software service. These were introduced
afterwards and reusing the device infrastructure for simplicity.
However, it meant to allocate a bit too much for something that only
required an initialization function to be called at right time.

Thus refactoring the devices structures relevantly:
- introducing struct init_entry which is a generic init end-point
- struct deviceconfig is removed and struct device owns everything now.
- SYS_INIT() generates only a struct init_entry via calling
  INIT_ENTRY_DEFINE()
- DEVICE_AND_API_INIT() generates a struct device and calls
  INIT_ENTRY_DEFINE()
- init objects sections are in ROM
- device objects sections are in RAM (but will end up in ROM once they
  will be 'constified')

It also generate a tiny memory gain on both ROM and RAM, which is nice.

Perhaps kernel/device.c could be renamed to something more relevant.

Andy Ross 32bb2395c2 timeout: Fix up API usage
Kernel timeouts have always been a 32 bit integer despite the
existence of generation macros, and existing code has been
inconsistent about using them. Upcoming commits are going to make the
timeout arguments opaque, so fix things up to be rigorously correct.
Changes include:

+ Adding a K_TIMEOUT_EQ() macro for code that needs to compare timeout
values for equality (e.g. with K_FOREVER or K_NO_WAIT).

+ Adding a k_msleep() synonym for k_sleep() which can continue to take
integral arguments as k_sleep() moves away to timeout arguments.

+ Pervasively using the K_MSEC(), K_SECONDS(), et. al. macros to
  generate timeout arguments.

+ Removing the usage of K_NO_WAIT as the final argument to
K_THREAD_DEFINE(). This is just a count of milliseconds and we need
  to use a zero.

This patch include no logic changes and should not affect generated
code at all.

The set of interrupt stacks is now expressed as an array. We

There is now a centralized declaration in kernel_internal.h.

On uniprocessor systems, z_interrupt_stacks has one element
and can be used in the same way as _interrupt_stack.

The IRQ stack for CPU 0 is now set in init.c instead of in
arch code.

Ulf Magnusson eddd98f811 kconfig: Replace some single-symbol 'if's with 'depends on'
I think people might be reading differences into 'if' and 'depends on'
that aren't there, like maybe 'if' being needed to "hide" a symbol,
while 'depends on' just adds a dependency.

There are no differences between 'if' and 'depends on'. 'if' is just a
shorthand for 'depends on'. They work the same when it comes to creating
implicit menus too.

The way symbols get "hidden" is through their dependencies not being
satisfied ('if'/'depends on' get copied up as a dependency on the
prompt).

Since 'if' and 'depends on' are the same, an 'if' with just a single
symbol in it can be replaced with a 'depends on'. IMO, it's best to
avoid 'if' there as a style choice too, because it confuses people into
thinking there's deep Kconfig magic going on that requires 'if'.

Going for 'depends on' can also remove some nested 'if's, which
generates nicer symbol information and docs, because nested 'if's really
are so simple/dumb that they just add the dependencies from both 'if's
to all symbols within.

Replace a bunch of single-symbol 'if's with 'depends on' to despam the
Kconfig files a bit and make it clearer how things work. Also do some
other minor related dependency refactoring.

The replacement isn't complete. Will fix up the rest later. Splitting it
a bit to make it more manageable.

(Everything above is true for choices, menus, and comments as well.)

Detected by tweaking the Kconfiglib parsing code. It's impossible to
detect after parsing, because 'if' turns into 'depends on'.

Andrew Boie efc5fe07a2 kernel: overhaul unused stack measurement
The existing stack_analyze APIs had some problems:

1. Not properly namespaced
2. Accepted the stack object as a parameter, yet the stack object
does not contain the necessary information to get the associated
buffer region, the thread object is needed for this
3. Caused a crash on certain platforms that do not allow inspection
of unused stack space for the currently running thread
4. No user mode access
5. Separately passed in thread name

We deprecate these functions and add a new API
k_thread_stack_space_get() which addresses all of these issues.

A helper API log_stack_usage() also added which resembles
STACK_ANALYZE() in functionality.

Marcin Niestroj c2543ddbfa shell: fix race condition in shell instance initialization
So far shell transport was initialized early before any k_poll events
and signals. transport_evt_handler() was passed as callback to transport
initializer and could be executed right away. This was true for example
with shell_uart when it enabled interrupts on RX and there were already
some bytes to read. As a result executed transport_evt_handler() is
operating on uninitialized k_poll signals.

Address this race condition by simply initializing shell transport when
everything is ready for processing data, i.e. on the end of shell
instance initialization.

if RTT_CONSOLE is enabled) unless CONSOLE is enabled some other way.
Symbols like CONFIG_RTT_RETRY_DELAY_MS won't be defined, because they
depend on CONSOLE.

Came up in https://github.com/zephyrproject-rtos/zephyr/pull/21860. This
fix was verified there.

(Would be nice to get rid of some 'select's in the console subsystem at

Ulf Magnusson 975de21858 kconfig: Global whitespace/consistency cleanup
Clean up space errors and use a consistent style throughout the Kconfig
files. This makes reading the Kconfig files more distraction-free, helps
with grepping, and encourages the same style getting copied around
everywhere (meaning another pass hopefully won't be needed).

Go for the most common style:

 - Indent properties with a single tab, including for choices.

Properties on choices work exactly the same syntactically as
properties on symbols, so not sure how the no-indentation thing
   happened.

 - Indent help texts with a tab followed by two spaces

 - Put a space between 'config' and the symbol name, not a tab. This
also helps when grepping for definitions.

 - Do '# A comment' instead of '#A comment'

I tweaked Kconfiglib a bit to find most of the stuff.

Some help texts were reflowed to 79 columns with 'gq' in Vim as well,
though not all, because I was afraid I'd accidentally mess up
formatting.

With CONFIG_LOG_IMMEDIATE, log output is printed immediately. If a

Before this patch, a simple shell command like:

int cmd_log_erase(const struct shell *shell, size_t argc, char **argv)
  {
          LOG_INF("hello world");
          return 0;
  }

would output something like:

  uart:~$ log erase
  [00:00:02.623,718] <inf> cmd_log: hello world

Nicolas Pitre 6311766d9a pointer-type args: cast appropriately to be 64-bit compatible
Using void pointers as universal arguments is widely used. However, when
compiling a 64-bit target, the compiler doesn't like when an int is
converted to a pointer and vice versa despite the presence of a cast.
This is due to a width mismatch between ints (32 bits) and pointers
(64 bits). The trick is to cast to a widening integer type such as
intptr_t and then cast to
void*.

When appropriate, the INT_TO_POINTER macro is used instead of this
double cast to make things clearer. The converse with POINTER_TO_INT
is also done which also serves as good code annotations.

While at it, remove unneeded casts to specific pointer types from void*
in the vicinity, and move to typed variable upon function entry to make
the code cleaner.

The structure of the va_list type is architecture-dependent, and it
doesn't seem possible to initialize va_list variables in a portable way

type like this:

    typedef struct {
        unsigned int gp_offset;
        unsigned int fp_offset;
        void *overflow_arg_area;
        void *reg_save_area;

Fortunately, the va_start() macro expects an uninitialized va_list
variable, so we can simply remove the initializers to make the code
portable.

The "select" command has been implemented, which allows user to
narrow down the command tree.

This implementation differs from the "select" command available
in the legacy shell. In a new implementation, if the selected

registered subcommand, the shell will call the handler of selected
command and pass the text as arguments.

This may be useful, for example, if someone wants to use the
shell as an interface to a modem that supports AT commands.
Instead of each time you write e.g:
	at at+command1
	at at+command2
	at at+command3
user can execute following commands:
	select at
	at+command1
	at+command2

at - root command for passing at commands to the modem
at+commandX - at command passed to the modem.

According to the Coverity issue 190614 (github issue #12319)
Fix for logically dead code in function buffer_trim
Before while execution cannot reach this statement: buff[0] = '\0';

Tested and noticed that part of code is unnecessary inside of while
For the test, I made the same function in CodeBlocks and send to it
string to detect and delete whitespaces. After deletion of dead code
part, I tested function again, it works.

Function buffer_trim first detects whitespace characters in the end
of the string using first while, then it adds '\0' to the end
of the string to mark that string has new end after all whitespace
characters. Second while finds whitespaces at the beginning
of the string and counts how many whitespaces it found.
In the end using if counted whitespaces are removing from the
string.

Jakub Rzeszutko 46a02322ec shell: allow commands to suspend shell thread
It was possible to deadlock the shell when command
suspended shell's thread and next another thread wanted
to print something on the shell.

To avoid that shell releases mutex before entering command
handler. Due to this change some adapations to shell
internal print functions have been applied.

This change addresses following usecase:
1. A command handler needs to call a (system) function which
communicate results via a callback, and this callback is expected
to print these results. The callback is called by the system from
another thread.
2. To achieve that, the handler needs to pass `struct shell *`
to callbacks, but also some other data specific to callback.
Thus, handles allocates some structure will those fields on
the stack.
3. The handler schedules this callback to be called.
4. As a reference to stack structure is passed to the callback,
the handler can't return immediately (or stack data will go out
of scope and will be overwritten).
5. So, the handler blocks waiting for callback to finish.

Previously, this scenario led to deadlock when the callback
trying or print to shell. With these changes, it just works,
as long as main handler and callback serialize there access
to the shell structure (i.e. when callback prints, the main
handler is blocked waiting for its completion).

Jakub Rzeszutko 2f040d8188 shell: unify commands execution
This change removes special handling for shell root commands.
Currently there is one loop in execute function that is used
to search commands on each level.

Fixed a bug where command buffer has been processed twice
when it was not needed (wildcards not found).

This change will allow to simplify "select" command
introduction.

Krzysztof Chruscinski 2e6892c9b0 shell: Add handling of CONFIG_LOG_INPLACE_PROCESS option
Extended shell to be able to process logs in place
(in the context of a log call). In order to achieve that,
shell was extended to support for TX blocking operations. If
CONFIG_LOG_INPLACE_PROCESS is enabled then shell instance
attempts to be initialized in blocking TX mode. If fails to
do so, shell log backend is disabled. If successfully enabled
logs are processed and printed in the context of the call.

Due to that change, user may expirience interleaved output as
shell has no means to multiplex shell output with logger output.
In extreme, huge amount of log messages may prevent shell thread
execution and shell may become unresponsive.

backends. It shall be use only for commands testing purposes.

Improved shell_execute_cmd function, now it clears command context
before new command will be executed.

Jakub Rzeszutko a88d5d7e4f shell: commands help unification
1. Changed return value of function: shell_cmd_precheck from bool to
int. Now it returns:
0 when argument count is correct and help print is not requested
1 when help was requested and printed
  -EINVAL on wrong arguments count
This change simply shell_cmd_precheck usege in command handlers.

2. Unified all commands in shell_cmd.c file.

3. Fixed a bug where help was not printed on wrong argument count.

Jakub Rzeszutko b0571746e2 shell: parsing output LF character
Some terminals literally interprets shell output data. Hence to print
a message in new line shell needs to send `\r\n` each time. To minimize
flash usage user can now send `\n` as a line delimiter and shell will
automatically add missing CR character.

Under GNU C, sizeof(void) = 1. This commit merely makes it explicit u8.
